SAN LEANDRO, CALIF. (April 6, 2010) – Ricky’s Sports Theatre & Grill (www.rickys.com) of San Leandro, Calif. – a pioneering Bay Area sports bar renowned nationally for its legendary atmosphere and colorful patrons - will again break industry ground April 7-11 when it shows the historic, free 3D broadcast of the Masters Tournament which also marks Tiger Woods’ return to golf.
Owner Ricky Ricardo said Ricky’s has “always been cutting edge” and will be among the relatively few sports bars with the technology in place to carry the Comcast broadcast which marks several industry firsts. The broadcast also marks another milestone for Ricky’s which pioneered the concept of a ‘sports’ bar/restaurant – long before the term ‘sports bar’ was coined and before the advent of sports bar chains. It was also among the first bar/restaurants of any kind to install satellite television in the 1970’s to provide the widest possible range of sporting events for customers.
“We are very pleased to show this unique event and we hope our customers and golf fans will join us to be part of television and golf history and celebrate another milestone in Ricky’s history,” said Ricardo whose father founded the bar and restaurant in 1946. “Ricky’s is proud to carry on our tradition as a pioneer among Bay Area sports bars.”
Located at 15028 Hesperian Blvd. in San Leandro, Ricky’s will have some sets of 3D glasses for customers. Ricardo – who plans to extend Happy Hour each day of the Masters – said the 3D system was installed by Walnut Creek-based Smart Home and Office.
An online report noted that the Masters Tournament will mark the first live national ‘next-generation’ 3D broadcast of a major sporting event on television, the first live 3D simulcast online and the first live multi-camera next-generation 3D production.
Each day, Comcast will provide two hours of live 3D coverage of the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
ABOUT RICKY’S: Established in 1946 by Ricky Ricardo Sr., Ricky’s is one of the nation’s oldest, independent and family-owned/operated sports bars and restaurants. It is owned by Ricky Ricardo Jr. who has worked each day side by side with his wife Tina Ricardo since they were married. Ricky – who began working with his Dad since he was 12 - assumed control of Ricky’s in the 1970s. Ricky and Tina treat every customer the same: “everyone is our best customer.
With its good food, spirited but always safe, family-oriented atmosphere due to its “No Knucklehead Policy,” and unparalleled array of television screens (75 and growing), Ricky’s is a Bay Area and national icon. It is consistently honored as one of America’s premier sports bars. In 2005, Sports Illustrated named Ricky’s the “#2 Sports Bar in America” and MSN in February 2010 also ranked it number two among the “Top 10 Sports Bars in the U.S.”
Fans of all sports and teams are welcome. But Ricky’s also has a global, deserved reputation as the sports bar for Oakland Raiders fans; each year Raiders fans from San Leandro to Sweden converge for the annual “Raider Mecca” event to celebrate all things ‘Silver and Black.’
Each wall in Ricky’s is loaded with sports memorabilia (“that’s because everyone has been here,” notes Ricardo.). And its patrons are as colorful and eclectic as the Bay Area teams and the region itself. On a given day, one might see a local or even national print or broadcast reporter interviewing a wide range of fans like “Raider Mort” about Raiders, A’s or Golden State Warriors issues, current or former coaches like Warrior Coach Don Nelson former Raiders coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden, or former players such as Raider legends John Vella, Ken Stabler or A’s Hall-of-Famer Ricky Henderson.
Ricky’s “We’ve Got Your Game” reputation ensures that fans of the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, soccer, auto racing or any other sport can watch their event in a positive and friendly environment.
