Press Release : Jim Zelinski
SF Giants Aaron Rowand, Jeremy Affeldt, Larry Baer, MLB Legend Tommy Lasorda and Cancer Researchers Bag Groceries and Raise Money in Docs and Jocks for Cancer Research
WHAT: On Tuesday, June 15, 2010 representatives from Safeway Inc. and some of the biggest names in Major League Baseball will team up with The Prostate Cancer Foundation and UCSF Medical Center to promote prostate cancer awareness and the importance of early detection. The event, Docs and Jocks for Cancer Research Celebrity Bagging, is part of Safeway’s annual fundraiser for prostate cancer research. To date, Safeway has raised over $54 million for the cause.
Giants Center Fielder Aaron Rowand, Relief Pitcher Jeremy Affeldt and team President Larry Baer will be joined “on the mound” of the checkout lane by baseball great Tommy Lasorda, Prostate Cancer Foundation CEO Dr. Jonathan Simons and UCSF Medical Center Chief of Urologic Oncology Dr. Peter Carroll. The Docs and Jocks will meet customers and hand out educational materials about prostate cancer while they bag groceries. Customers will have the opportunity to donate to cancer research while the celebrities bag their groceries. Comcast SportsNet Anchor Brodie Brazil will emcee the event and conduct “play-by-play” by interviewing celebrities as they work and offering good-natured critiques of the celebrities’ bagging skills.
Customers will also meet Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) founder Michael Milken, whose organization is the largest funder of cancer research in the nation. The money raised during Safeway’s month-long Prostate Cancer Awareness fundraiser will be donated through PCF to some of the premier cancer research hospitals and centers in North America, including UCSF Medical Center.
